China offers help to host Commonwealth Games


New Delhi: China offered its help to India to host the Commonwealth Games here in 2010. Chinese army's deputy chief Lt Gen Ma Xiaotian, who was n New Delhi along with a military delegation, made the offer during his meeting with Defence Minister A K Antony, Defence Ministry sources said.

Lt Gen Xiaotian is in India to witness the Sino-Indian joint army exercise in progress at Belgaum and to attend the second annual defence dialogue between the two countries.

Xiaotian, during his meeting with Antony, offered China's expertise and experience gained in hosting the Beijing Olympics this year to help New Delhi host the Commonwealth Games, sources said.

Strongly condemning last month's terror attack in Mumbai, the Chinese General conveyed his government's condolences to the victims. His visit to Mumbai, Xiaotian said, was intended to convey a strong message of support to India at this point of time.

Antony said the exercise was timely, as both countries faced the common threat of terrorism. He said terrorism was a global phenomenon and needed to be fought jointly by all peace-loving countries.

The Defence Minister said India's policy was one of friendship with China and that New Delhi attached priority to its relations with Beijing.
